La apreciación del grafiti como arte urbano. El caso del Graffiti Fest en Puerto Vallarta

Abstract

El grafiti como arte urbano es un concepto difícil de encasillar, desde su concepción como un constructo cultural, hasta su categorización, dada su heterogeneidad de creación. Sin embargo, estas obras transitorias tienen una representación en la sociedad que interpreta y valora su mensaje, a su vez que lo dignifica como arte. El presente trabajo examina la relación entre el arte urbano creado en Puerto Vallarta, en específico las intervenciones realizadas en el evento Graffiti Fest, con la percepción y la apreciación de la comunidad habitante de los espacios en los que se plasmaron las obras. A partir de una definición abierta del arte se investiga la institucionalización, la representación y el reconocimiento de las obras por parte de la comunidad. El artículo plantea una revisión conceptual sobre el arte urbano y el grafiti para establecer su valor como arte en relación con su contexto y apropiación. Se estudia el Graffiti Fest por medio de entrevistas a los autores, con el propósito de identificar su actividad como una forma de expresión y divulgación artística que busca acercar el grafiti en cuanto forma de arte a la sociedad. Además, se analiza la apropiación de la comunidad, por medio de una entrevista aplicada a la población, a fin de determinar su concepción del grafiti como arte y la valoración de las obras realizadas. Los resultados muestran que la identificación como forma de arte de las obras es resultado de su institucionalización y vinculación con el muralismo callejero y el grafiti artístico.

Graffiti as urban art is a difficult concept to pigeonhole, from its conception as a cultural construct, to its categorization, given the heterogeneity of its creation. However, these transitory works have a representation in a society that not only interprets and values their message, but also dignifies it as art. This work examines the relationship between urban art created in Puerto Vallarta, specifically the interventions made in the Graffiti Fest event, and the perception and appreciation of the community living in the spaces where the works were shaped. Based on an open definition of art, the institutionalization, representation, and recognition of the works by the community are investigated. The article proposes a conceptual review of urban art and graffiti to establish their value as art in relation to their context and appropriation. The Graffiti Fest is studied through some interviews with the authors, with the purpose of identifying their activity as a form of artistic expression and dissemination that seeks to bring closer to society the concept of graffiti as a form of art. In addition, we analyzed the appropriation of the community through an interview applied to the population, conducive to determine their conception of graffiti as art and the value of the works that have been produced. The results show that the identification of these works as art comes from the institutionalization and linkage to street mural painting and artistic graffiti.
