Berth allocation in port terminals is a complex process that, when managed manually, leads to excessive waiting times and inefficient use of resources. This challenge motivated the present study at Lynnterm terminal, operated by SSA Marine Canada in North Vancouver. The objective was to study the feasibility of developing a Machine Learning model to predict and support berth allocation at SSA Marine Canada, using historical data and real-time variables. To achieve this, 188,938 cargo booking records (3,119 unique vessel calls) records from the period January 2010 to March 2026 were analyzed, complemented by a structured survey applied to five terminal operators. Eight supervised classification algorithms were compared, ranging from a deterministic baseline to ensemble models, evaluated using accuracy and weighted F1 with temporal cross-validation (TimeSeriesSplit, five folds). XGBoost achieved an accuracy of 66.7% (weighted F1 = 0.661) for berth classification, outperforming the deterministic baseline by 25.7 percentage points (a 62.7% relative improvement). The most influential variables were the vessel's recent berth affinity rate, the last berth visited, concurrent berth occupancy indicators, and for export voyages the terminal storage area where cargo is staged prior to vessel arrival. The findings allow determining whether the technical, operational and organizational conditions of the terminal are sufficient to support the development and implementation of this type of predictive model. It is concluded that the development of a Machine Learning model for berth allocation at SSA Marine Canada is feasible under certain conditions, providing concrete evidence for decision-making regarding its potential implementation.eng
