El informe analiza la situación actual de la madera plástica reciclada en Colombia como alternativa sostenible frente a la crisis ambiental ocasionada por el manejo inadecuado de residuos plásticos. A través de un enfoque cualitativo y descriptivo, el estudio identifica los factores técnicos, económicos y sociales que limitan su adopción, tales como la falta de infraestructura, desconocimiento del consumidor y altos costos iniciales. Además, recoge percepciones de distintos actores mediante encuestas, destacando tanto el potencial económico y ambiental de la madera plástica como las barreras culturales y normativas que frenan su uso masivo en sectores como la construcción, mobiliario urbano y la agroindustria. El trabajo propone estrategias concretas para incrementar el uso de este material, como el fortalecimiento de la infraestructura de reciclaje, la educación ambiental, incentivos gubernamentales y la inclusión de recicladores informales en la cadena productiva. Concluye que, si se superan estas barreras, la madera plástica podría consolidarse como un insumo competitivo, sostenible y socialmente inclusivo, contribuyendo significativamente a la economía circular y a la reducción de la deforestación y la contaminación plástica en el país.

The report analyzes the current situation of recycled plastic wood in Colombia as a sustainable alternative to the environmental crisis caused by the inadequate management of plastic waste. Through a qualitative and descriptive approach, the study identifies the technical, economic, and social factors that limit its adoption, such as the lack of infrastructure, lack of consumer awareness, and high initial costs. It also gathers perceptions from different stakeholders through surveys, highlighting both the economic and environmental potential of plastic wood and the cultural and regulatory barriers that hinder its widespread use in sectors such as construction, urban furniture, and agribusiness. The work proposes concrete strategies to increase the use of this material, including strengthening recycling infrastructure, environmental education, government incentives, and the inclusion of informal recyclers in the production chain. It concludes that if these barriers are overcome, plastic wood could be established as a competitive, sustainable, and socially inclusive input, significantly contributing to the circular economy and reducing deforestation and plastic pollution in the country.
