| dc.description.abstract | El contexto globalizado, altamente competitivo y cada vez más consciente de las demandas ambientales y sociales, impone a las empresas, independientemente de su tamaño o actividad económica, el reto de responder estratégicamente a dichas exigencias. La literatura reconoce que la implementación de prácticas de sostenibilidad resulta más efectiva cuando se aborda a nivel de la cadena de suministro, superando los límites de la empresa individual. Estas acciones han sido estudiadas, principalmente, bajo los conceptos de gestión verde de la cadena de suministro (GSCM) y gestión sostenible de la cadena de suministro (SSCM); aunque el debate académico continúa respecto al alcance de cada uno, existe consenso en que la SSCM integra los objetivos económicos, ambientales y sociales propios de la sostenibilidad. A partir de las oportunidades de investigación identificadas en el dominio, esta tesis doctoral asume tres premisas principales: (i) la necesidad de estudiar simultáneamente los efectos entre los constructos de impulsores, prácticas y desempeño; (ii) la conveniencia de abordar el desempeño desde las perspectivas económica, ambiental y social; y (iii) la pertinencia de enfocarse en las pymes de una economía emergente como Colombia. En consecuencia, la pregunta central de investigación se formula como ¿qué influencia tienen los impulsores en la implementación de las prácticas de SSCM y en el desempeño de las pymes en Colombia? El modelo conceptual se construye mediante la triangulación de tres lentes teóricos complementarios: la teoría institucional, la perspectiva de las motivaciones y la teoría de la visión basada en prácticas. La posición ontológica y epistemológica se orienta hacia el post-positivismo, bajo un enfoque metodológico cuantitativo. A partir de una revisión sistemática de la literatura se definen los indicadores de medición de los constructos de interés, y se diseña, valida y aplica un instrumento de encuesta a una muestra final de 152 pymes colombianas. El análisis de los datos se realiza mediante el modelo de ecuaciones estructurales de mínimos cuadrados parciales (PLS-SEM), con el software SmartPLS 4.0 ®, siguiendo un enfoque disjunto de dos etapas para especificar las categorías de impulsores y prácticas de SSCM como constructos de orden superior. La evaluación comprende el modelo de medida, el modelo estructural con estimación de significancia mediante bootstrapping, y la valoración predictiva. Los resultados evidencian que ocho de las once hipótesis de efecto directo están soportadas empíricamente, y las dos hipótesis de mediación (H6: mediación parcial complementaria del desempeño social entre el desempeño ambiental y económico; H7: mediación total de las prácticas de SSCM entre los impulsores y el desempeño TBL) encuentran respaldo en el análisis de efectos indirectos. Tres hallazgos concentran la contribución empírica de la investigación. Primero, se identifica una asimetría en los impulsores: las presiones institucionales son el predictor más fuerte de las prácticas ambientales, mientras que las prácticas sociales dependen principalmente de las motivaciones internas, probablemente por la ausencia de un marco institucional social consolidado. Segundo, las prácticas de SSCM no ejercen un efecto directo significativo sobre el desempeño económico, pero sí sobre el ambiental y social. Tercero, se documenta un efecto cascada entre las dimensiones del desempeño: ambiental → social y social → económico, a través de la cual toda la influencia de los impulsores sobre el desempeño se canaliza por vía indirecta, en línea con la especificación de mediación total adoptada en el modelo conceptual, otorgando a las prácticas de SSCM el rol de mecanismo mediador central del modelo. Por todo lo anterior, esta investigación ofrece contribuciones teóricas y prácticas relevantes. En el plano teórico, integra diferentes lentes teóricos en un mismo modelo empírico, documenta la cascada ambiental–social–económica como mecanismo mediador en pymes, evidencia la asimetría entre los impulsores de las prácticas y amplía la base empírica de la SSCM al contexto de pymes colombianas. En el plano gerencial y de política pública, los hallazgos indican que la vía hacia el desempeño económico de las pymes no transita por la reducción directa de costes asociados a la sostenibilidad, sino por la construcción progresiva de capacidades ambientales y sociales que posteriormente se traducen en valor económico. Ello implica que las decisiones de inversión en SSCM deben evaluarse en un horizonte temporal que reconozca la naturaleza de los beneficios, y que la política pública requiere fortalecer la institucionalización de la dimensión social de la sostenibilidad, hoy dependiente, de manera casi exclusiva, de la convicción ética de los empresarios. | spa |
| dc.description.abstract | In a globalised, highly competitive context that is increasingly aware of environmental and social demands, firms—regardless of their size or economic activity—face the challenge of responding strategically to such requirements. The literature recognises that the implementation of sustainability practices is more effective when addressed at the supply chain level, beyond the boundaries of the individual firm. These initiatives have been studied primarily under the concepts of green supply chain management (GSCM) and sustainable supply chain management (SSCM); although the academic debate on the scope of each continues, there is consensus that SSCM integrates the economic, environmental, and social objectives of sustainability. Drawing on the research opportunities identified in the field, this doctoral dissertation adopts three main premises: (i) the need to simultaneously examine the effects among the constructs of drivers, practices, and performance; (ii) the value of approaching performance from the economic, environmental, and social perspectives; and (iii) the relevance of focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an emerging economy such as Colombia. Accordingly, the central research question is formulated as What influence do drivers exert on the implementation of SSCM practices and on the performance of SMEs in Colombia? The conceptual model is built through the triangulation of three complementary theoretical lenses: institutional theory, the motives perspective, and the practice-based view. The ontological and epistemological stance is post-positivist, under a quantitative methodological approach. Based on a systematic literature review, the measurement indicators of the constructs of interest are defined, and a survey instrument is designed, validated, and administered to a final sample of 152 Colombian SMEs. Data analysis is conducted using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0®, following a two-stage disjoint approach to specify the categories of drivers and SSCM practices as higher-order constructs. The evaluation comprises the measurement model, the structural model with significance estimation through bootstrapping, and the predictive assessment. The results show that eight of the eleven direct-effect hypotheses are empirically supported, and the two mediation hypotheses (H6: complementary partial mediation of social performance between environmental and economic performance; H7: full mediation of SSCM practices between drivers and triple bottom line performance) find support in the analysis of indirect effects. Three findings concentrate the empirical contribution of the research. First, an asymmetry among drivers is identified: institutional pressures are the strongest predictor of environmental practices, whereas social practices depend mainly on internal motives, likely owing to the absence of a consolidated social institutional framework. Second, SSCM practices do not exert a significant direct effect on economic performance, but they do influence environmental and social performance. Third, a cascade effect among the performance dimensions is documented—environmental → social and social → economic—through which the entire influence of drivers on performance is channelled indirectly, in line with the full mediation specification adopted in the conceptual model, granting SSCM practices the role of central mediating mechanism of the model. Based on the foregoing, this research offers relevant theoretical and practical contributions. Theoretically, it integrates different theoretical lenses into a single empirical model, documents the environmental–social–economic cascade as a mediating mechanism in SMEs, evidences the asymmetry among the drivers of practices, and broadens the empirical base of SSCM in the context of Colombian SMEs. From a managerial and public policy standpoint, the findings indicate that the path to economic performance for SMEs does not run through direct cost reductions associated with sustainability, but through the progressive building of environmental and social capabilities that subsequently translate into economic value. This implies that investment decisions in SSCM should be evaluated within a time horizon that acknowledges the nature of the benefits, and that public policy needs to strengthen the institutionalisation of the social dimension of sustainability, which is currently dependent—almost exclusively—on the ethical conviction of business owners. | eng |
